Intelligent energy (or 'integrated operations') is expected to improve oil and gas recruitment, improve the industry's environmental performance, help improve and manage competence and knowledge, not to mention increasing recovery and reducing costs.
Yet for such an important thing, there are very few people specialising in it. Most oil and gas companies have a few experts dedicated to the subject, with titles such as 'smart fields consultant' and 'head of iValue'. But if the industry really thinks IT can make such a large contribution to the overall business, doesn't it deserve more people dedicated to it? For example, what is 10 per cent of all oil company staff were dedicated to this, rather than one or two people? Shouldn't there be university courses on intelligent energy, or make it a proper discipline?
