Finding Petroleum

Pushing the boundaries to find petroleum

Digital Energy Journal has been receiving questions from students asking what a smart field actually is. How do we answer this question, apart from to say it is a Shell trademark? Perhaps a smart field is a journey, not a specific destination. Or should it be a high priority for the industry to agree on a single name for this and try to define in a simple way what we are actually aiming to achieve?

Hi Karl, good answer, thought will add my 2 cents.

Smart field is surely shell terminology for Digital Oilfield of the future (DOFF). Its called Ifield by Chevron and Fields of future by BP. The common denominator is DOFF which in last 5 yrs whose definition has become more of a moving target in last 4 yrs. I conducted a workshops with CIOs of major oil companies at Intel R&D center in Arizona 2 yrs back and we had 20 definition of field of future. Let me try and add 21st definition, in my 2 cents :) Smart field is future of oilfields where machines guide human actions vs. human guiding machine actions. If you recollect 1990s-2000s was computer era, encouraging people to people interaction, the next generation will be Machine Era where machines are smart enough to guide human interactions.

Hi Karl,

Surely a smart field (or what ever name) is an oil field that can tell us what is happening as it happens, without us needing to go near it. A smarter field would be able to tell us something about itself before it happend and an even smarter field would be able to tell us something about itself before it happened and reacted accordingly, therefore preventing something negative happening, or causing something positive happening.

I'm not sure the name matters - I guess the important think is making it happen

Regards,

David

This link describes more about what a smart field is & it's benefits. Although we are still away from the destination yet it looks once the right instrumentation to monitor & control are in place, there will be increased demand for IT services & solutions.
